The Battle of Iwo Jima also known as Operation Detachment was fought between the Unites States and the Empire of Japan.  The Battle was fought during February and March of 1945 during the Pacific Campaign of World War II.  The battle is famous for the image of the 28th Regiment 5th Marines of the Unites States raising the U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi during the battle.  Three of the six flag raisers were killed before Iwo Jima was secured.  Mount Suribachi was the highest point of fighting, the fighting was very intense in the first week.  The victory at Iwo Jima was another step towards the Japanese Home Islands.

Mike Strank was born in Jarabenia, Czechoslovakia in 1919.  He was the leader and Sergent of all the boys who raised the flag in Iwo Jima.  Mike and the boys climbed up Mt. Suribachi where they raised the large flag for all Marines to see.  Mike's right hand is the only one not on the flag because he is helping one of the younger guys hold up the heavy flag pole.  Mike turned down a promotion two months earlier saying he wanted to stay with his men.  Mike died March 1st, 1945 when he was hit by a mortar as he was diagramming a plan in the sand for his boys.  He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
